Correspondence of Robert Ridgway (1864-1920), artwork of John L. Ridgway, and family miscellanea. Correspondence includes 18 letters between R. Ridgway and family describing his experiences on the U.S.G.S. Fortieth Parallel Survey of 1867 through the Caribbean Sea, Panama, Sierra Nevada mountains, the Great Basin desert, and later in the Wasatch Mountains; also includes proofs of and materials concerning R. Ridgway's book Birds of North and Middle America. Significant correspondents include Spence Baird, Harriet J. Ridgway, Daniel Ridgway, and Amelia Ridgway. Artwork by John L. Ridway includes oil paintings, pencil drawings, and pen and ink illustrations; also includes drawings by unknown artist(s) and I.E. Wright; and a draft of J. Ridgway's book Scientific illustration. Miscellanea includes photographs, printed materials, and family items.
